My daughter, Olive, is almost three. She’s at that age now when you put on a movie she’ll want to watch it repeatedly.
As soon as one of her favorite shows is nearing completion I can hear her say, “Dad, again!”
The movie of the month for her (the one she wishes to watch over and over) is The Prince of Egypt. Olive calls it “Moses.” This movie is the Dreamworks rendition of the biblical story of Moses and the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. I love watching with her.
One time when we were watching “Moses,” Olive said something that was simple, deep, and extremely theological. The scene in the movie was the parting of the sea, when Moses and the Israelites were trapped between the sea and the angry Egyptians chasing after them. In a scene of desperation Moses reaches out his staff, touches the water, the sea miraculously parts, and the Israelites walk through it on dry ground.
As soon as the sea parted Olive turned to me and said, “God did it.” That’s right folks, my daughter is a genius (#prouddad). Ok, so maybe I’m a little over zealous about my daughter, but what she said was exactly what God was trying to communicate in the story of the Exodus: God did it.
God told Moses in Exodus 7:3–5:
“And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”
God wanted Pharaoh to know through His signs and wonders that “God did it.” It was the Lord who brought down each of the gods of Egypt with every plague to prove that He is the great “I AM”!
Even though it was Moses who put his staff in the water, it was God who did it.
So Olive is right, God did it.
Is God doing something in your life where you could simply declare, “God did it?”
